20 months!

Lucie is 20 months today! She had a great day because she was able to visit a children's museum called the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum that has educational and sensory exhibits, fun games and activities and so many more things for children of all ages. Lucie loves spending time here. Today, she played with some new friends and some familiar ones that we see at the library in our neighborhood.

It is fun to watch her interactions with other children. She is usually quite social and friendly. Today, she showed another little girl how to blow bubbles! Imagine, Lucie as teacher! When it was time to leave, she didn't make a fuss. She left happily, perhaps knowing that Papa will be taking her here again very soon!

This month, we took Lucie to an historic farm in Ann Arbor where she was able to feed the goats. What a great experience for her and we are happy to see how much she enjoyed being near the animals.

Lucie is getting less and less "chubby" as she is expending so much more energy running around everywhere these days. She has two more upper teeth that are just beginning to show. She has four teeth right now. Because she has few teeth, we are still giving her plenty of purées and soft foods. So far, she has been pretty open minded about food. She loves fruit and also any kind of bread, especially brioche and croissant --- a real French girl!

Lately, when she wants something, she makes these whining sounds. We are trying to encourage her to say Maman/Papa, s'il tu plait. Mostly, she says, 'Maman', with one hand on her heart. Hard to say 'no' to that! Of course, we are looking forward to hearing Lucie say real words. She talks to her poupee and Mouton so much, we would love to know what she's saying!

Our little Lucie is 19 months old today! Time has flown by so fast! The first few months seem like a blur to me right now. We had some difficult challenges during the first few months because of Lucie having colic but once her 4th or 5th !month came, she really came into her own. She is always cheerful and smiling and overall, just an easy going, happy baby. We couldn't have asked for a greater child --- she really is just a blessing to be around.

For her 6 months, she had her baptism. It was very special to have both of her grandparents present for this occasion, in addition to her Parrain and Tonton Benoit! She was so well behaved during the entire ceremony and was a happy camper afterwards for a lunch reception at a local restaurant.

When she was 14 months, she visited France for Christmas and made her very first walking steps!!! She got to meet her cousins Zoe and Tonton Stephane and Tata Severine.

Once we returned home, she has steadily grown more confident at walking and now is running every where. She says Maman and Papa a lot and says 'uh oh' whenever she drops something.

As parents, we know how influential her first few years are to her future, so we are trying to keep her active and engaged as much as possible. We have and continue to refer to some parenting guidebooks to help us, most notably The Happiest Baby on the Block and The Happiest Toddler on the Block by Harvey Karp. We recommend them to ant new parent or future parents.  Another great book is Brain Rules for Babies by John Medina. He offers so much insight on the baby's brain development from a very scientific perspective. His website also great with useful videos : http://www.brainrules.net

First month already!

It's hard to believe that a month has already passed since Lucie's birth. The past few weeks have been particularly busy and difficult for all of us as Lucie is getting used to living "on the outside." Lately, she's had a series of restless nights with lots of fussiness and [inconsolable] crying. Even so, we've seen quite a few developments from her. At 3 weeks old, she already started to make her first communication/talking sounds --- "cooing" back at us when we speak to her. At her 1-month scheduled visit to the pediatrician, the doctor was quite surprised to see Lucie cooing and making direct eye contact, particularly since that's something often seen later, at 6 - 8 weeks. As for her weight, she weighed in like a champ! At one month, she weighed in at 9 lbs 14 ounces/ 4.48kg. She gained back the 1 pound that she lost after birth plus another pound and 2 ounces.

We have not yet taken Lucie outside too much nor have we had too many visits from friends as it is still early but we've had a lot of comments on who she looks like. What would you say?

Her grandmother (Ba Ngoai), Dao, left on Monday and we are all feeling the void! No more home-cooked meals and constant help, along with free singing lessons. We are "on our own" now. We have much to be thankful for, especially for all the invaluable help we've received over the last 5 weeks.  A few pics of Lucie with Ba Ngoai:

Lucie is 1 week old!

Today marks the first full week since the birth of Lucie. We came home from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. Lucie was born at 6:04pm on Friday, October 19, 2012 in Ann Arbor at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She weighed 8 lbs and 11.2 ounces/ 3.94kg! Her height was 21 inches/53.34cm. A big baby girl :) Lucie is derived from the name of Pierre's grandmother, Lucienne. It comes from the Latin root Lux, meaning "light" and Stella is Latin for "star." So, together her name means starlight :)

Since her birth, she has been breastfeeding like a champion! She lost very little weight in the first few days following birth and as of Wednesday, her weight has now stabilized --- with just her mommy's milk. Just 7 days old, she is now turning her eyes and her head in the direction of the sound when she hears her mommy or daddy's voice. She does the same when she hears her grandma Dao's voice too. She cried during her first "bath" but enjoyed her second bath - thanks to her grandma's soothing singing voice!

Here she is, taking a quick nap in a musical bouncer given to us by our friends Bobby andVilay.

A glimmer of a smile...

Papa's back from work!
